Pathophysiology

Intrinsic (corpuscular) factors

e.g. Congenital membrane defects - spherocytosis, elliptocytosis, sickle cell

Extrinsic (extra-corpuscular) factors

e.g. Immune reactions - transfusion reactions, autoimmune reactions
Hypersplenism (trapped in enlarged spleen) - malaria, portal hypertension
Trauma/Mechanical (via disturbed blood flow) e.g. valvular defects, intravascular thrombi
Drug/Toxins - G6PD deficiency + fava beans
Infection (RBC pathogens)
