What academic resources the Flinders SOM offers in the pre-clinical years
- ~ 50 PBL cases over 2 years covering major concepts in physiology,
general pathology and common diseases
- PBL cases developed by clinicians and biomedical scientists but usually
delivered by non-clinicians
- A weekly list of general learning objectives
- A wide range of online resources e.g. recorded lectures, handouts,
slideshows
- Supporting supplementary lectures
- Past exam papers (online)
- Anatomy elective
- Biochemistry elective
What resources the Flinders SOM doesn't offer in the pre-clinical years
- A formalised or systematic lecture program that chronologically supports
every component of the PBL syllabus
- Systematic pathology lectures
- Specific coverage of pharmacology or therapeutics (and variable number
at GEMP III)
- Formal coverage of clinical sciences e.g medicine or surgery
- Specific guidance on the depth or breadth of knowledge required
- Regular clinician involvement in PBL or lectures
- Advice on how to integrate the biomedical sciences with clinical
application
Immediate tasks for the student
- Develop a grounding in the biomedical sciences in preparation for
clinical exposure in GEMP III
- Able to sift, organise and remember a large amount of material crossing
many biomedical and clinical disciplines
- Able to answer clinically-orientated problems in the exam which will
draw upon many knowledge disciplines (as well as questions that will be
discipline-specific)
