INSTRUCTIONS FOR PATIENTS WITH HEAD INJURIES

Although no evidence of any serious injury is found at this time it is advisable to watch for any unusual reactions over the next 24-48 hours.

Mild headaches, slight dizziness, and difficulty concentrating are common after head injuries, sometimes for weeks after the injury. Rest and paracetamol every four hours will usually control the headaches in the early stages. Strenuous physical or social activity should be avoided.

The patient should return to the Emergency Department at once, day or night, if there is:

1. Continuing or severe headache.
2. Vomiting.
3. Increased drowsiness, or giddy spells.
4. Difficulty in rousing the patient from sleep (check every 2 hours).
5. Unusual behaviour.
6. Difficulty with vision; blurring, double vision.
7. Occurrence of convulsions (Fits).
