FRACTURE DISPLACEMENT

Shift

Tilt or 'Angulation' Shortening Rotation
Measured in cm or % of the width of the shaft

If no apposition then state 'off-ended'

Measured as degrees Measured in cm Usually clinically evident then radiologically evident
State direction in terms of
  • Anatomical planes - anterior/posterior, medial/lateral
  • Orthopaedic terms
    Dorsal/Volar, Radial/Ulnar, Valgus/Varus
State direction as internally/externally rotated
e.g. Mid-shaft femoral fracture with lateral shift of the distal fragment 50% of the width of the shaft e.g. Metacarpal fracture with 30 degrees volar tilt of the distal fragment NB differentiate impaction from 'overlapping' or 'overriding'
